Katie's Cuppas - Halton Gill

Not really a breakfast, or even a cafe - but this has to be one of our all time favourites.  Situated in the hamlet of Halton Gill, Katie's Cuppas consists of a farm outhouse containing tea and coffee making facilities, cakes and a toilet.

Seating is outside, under a covered porch across the road.  The cakes are first rate and the choice of (make your own) drinks impressive, with a selection of teas, coffee and cold drinks in the fridge.

Payment is on an honesty basis - check the price written on the wall (drinks) or cakes (slices are individually wrapped and marked) and put your money in the plastic box.

Breakfast rating:  πŸ³πŸ³ (no hot food but cracking cakes!)

In June 2015, we visited the UK from Chicago, and were traveling through the Dales at one point. We discovered the most charming and picturesque hamlet when we stumbled upon the Fourteenth Century community of Halton Gill. We stopped for refreshments at Katie’s Cuppas, and were delighted to find a fine assortment of snacks and drinks, and even more delighted by the honor system employed there for purchase. We used the washroom facilities in turn, and then purchased our refreshments and left.

It wasn’t until the next mid-day, when we were already north of Hadrian’s Wall, that I discovered that my $1,600 Canon lens was missing. After a quick mental inventory, I realized I must have left it at Katie’s Cuppas. Remembering the name of the community, I did a rapid online search of businesses in Halton Gill and found a youth hostel. I quickly called the proprietor and gave her the facts of my predicament, and she called the mother of the young lady whose name the snack stop bore. That woman soon called me and offered to not only mail the lens to me, but even to send it internationally to my home in Chicago so we wouldn’t risk missing delivery in Scotland. She then carefully and lovingly wrapped the lens into a sturdy parcel and drove many miles to send it to me in America, without any certainty of repayment (which I of course promptly made upon my return home).

Upon later reflection, it occurred to me that a business establishment that is set up on the honor system was precisely the best possible location where I could have misplaced an expensive article. I cannot sing the praises of these good, decent people enough!
